Together with Cartooning for Peace, we are pleased to announce the launch of information sessions designed specifically for cartoonists, as part of the project “Support to the Legal Protection of press cartoonists” administrated by the Global Media Defence Fund (GMDF) managed by UNESCO. The main objective of the project is to improve the legal protection of press cartoonists and thus contribute to an environment of free, plural and quality information for citizens.
In the face of ramping legal censorship, the four online information sessions will offer a presentation of the legal framework and institutions defending freedom of expression in 4 distinct geographical areas.
Conducted by Media Defence’s legal experts and featuring cartoonists, the sessions will also seek to facilitate future collaboration between all participants.
Spread over the two months of October and November 2021, the sessions are aimed for cartoonists and legal professionals and will focus on:
- Session 1: Legal framework for freedom of expression institutions in Africa
- Session 2: Legal framework for freedom of expression institutions in Asia
- Session 3: Legal framework for freedom of expression institutions in Europe
- Session 4: Legal framework for freedom of expression institutions in Latin America
The sessions will present and explain the often complex legal protection options available to cartoonists. By addressing regional treaties and the institutions that ensure their application, detailing the steps to follow, and providing contacts adapted to different cases, the sessions will aim to be as exhaustive as possible while leaving room for exchange and testimony.
