Last year we funded 18 organisations in 17 countries.

Our aim is to expand this network, creating better local-level access to legal support for independent media who lack the financial means to access it at commercial rates.

How to apply

We make different calls for applications for specific countries or regions throughout the year. The conditions and templates for the application process are set in each call but usually comprises two steps: a concept note and a full application.

We will give priority to proposals which

  • respond to a demonstrated need on the ground,
  • increase the geographical coverage of our support,
  • and are likely to have a high impact on media freedom.

Please note: we do not fund employment-related litigation or training of journalists.

If you are not sure whether you qualify, please submit an application or get in touch and our staff will advise you.

For more information, please read our Application Guide for organisations applying to become a funded partner of Media Defence.
