Summary

The Director of Finance and Operations is responsible for Media Defence’s financial and administrative functions. This position plays a crucial role in strategic development and process improvements to maintain the continuing success of the organisation.

We are looking for a qualified finance leader who understands the international charity sector and is confident managing a team, delivering high quality reports and working at the board level.

Our Client

Media Defence is an international human rights organisation, founded in 2008 from a programme of work by the Open Society Initiative (OSI), which provides legal defence to journalists, citizen journalists and independent media around the world who are under threat for their reporting.

The Role

  • Developing and overseeing the organisation’s long-term financial strategy
  • Reporting to the board on the organisation’s financial stability and discussing potential risks and mitigating strategies
  • Delivering the annual, quarterly and monthly financials to the organisation
  • Ensure the charity fulfils its legal, statutory and donor’s obligations
  • Oversight of HR, IT and Operations

 
Main Duties

  • Deliver reliable financial reports to the CEO and board
  • Manage the finance, HR, IT and operations functions
  • Support Media Defence achieving their financial strategy wider 2025-2029 strategic goals

 
The Successful Candidate

  • Qualified accountant. You must be a full member of ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or ICAS
  • Experience leading a finance team and reporting into the CEO and board
  • Experience working in an international charity and good knowledge of donor reporting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience managing functions outside of finance are advantageous but NOT essential

 
What’s on offer?

  • £70,000 – £80,000 per annum
  • Hybrid working. 2 days per week in the London office (Chancery Lane)
  • Up to 8% employer pension contribution
  • 25 days leave, plus bank holiday. (increases to 30 days with length of service)
  • Third Friday of every month off
