As part of our work to help build a strong global legal defence network for independent media, Media Defence is excited to announce another new funded partner as part of the Digital Rights Advocates Project.
Media Defence has renewed its partnership with the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) to deliver better local-level access to legal assistance for independent media outlets, journalists and bloggers who lack the financial means to access legal support at commercial rates. The PTCIJ worked with Media Defence in 2019 during the first stage of our Digital Rights Advocates Project, and will now receive further support until August 2021.
As the Internet has become an integral part of people’s lives and journalism has moved increasingly online, there has been a rising demand for legal support amongst bloggers and independent media outlets who have been targeted as a result of or in connection with their journalistic activities online. The PTCIJ will establish a legal aid unit to protect journalists across Nigeria in cases related to digital rights.
