Committee for Legal Aid to Poor
The Committee for Legal Aid to Poor (CLAP) is an Indian NGO focussed on providing legal services for the poor and advocating for law reform. CLAP's motivating vision is a society where justice and equity prevail irrespective of gender, religion, caste, creed, colour or socio-economic status. In achieving these aims, CLAP has targeted the deep rooted inequalities inherent within Indian society, particularly focussing on access to justice. CLAP is dedicated to media freedom, and has made the legal defence of journalists, bloggers, press and electronic media in court proceedings a key priority of its work.
In partnership with MLDI, CLAP helped train 11 lawyers in media law in north-eastern states of India. This has significantly increased the capacity for CLAP to help defend journalists and bloggers living in some of the poorest parts of India.
