Hannah Stoate

Hannah is Capacity Building Manager and is responsible for overseeing Media Defence’s work with funded partner organisations as well as the training programme for lawyers. She joined Media Defence in 2019 as Project Coordinator for the Digital Rights Advocates Project, becoming Training Manager in 2021 and has been in her current role since the beginning of 2023. She is also on Peace Brigades International (PBI)’s Project Exploratory Committee which is developing a regional approach to human rights defender protection.

Prior to Media Defence, Hannah worked for two years with human rights defenders at risk at Front Line Defenders and PBI Kenya. In addition, she has managed projects collaborating with civil society in Uganda and Tanzania. Hannah holds a LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from the Geneva Academy and a Law LLB from King’s College London, spending her third year at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Hannah speaks French and conversational Spanish.
