The European Court of Human Rights has dismissed politician's claim that his right to reputation had been violated because he was refused permission to sue Google Inc. for allegedly defamatory remarks on the Blogger.com platform. Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI) co-ordinated a coalition of eight interveners in the case.

MLDI CEO named OSF New Executives Fund Recipient

The Chief Executive of the Media Legal Defence Initiative, Lucy Freeman, was today named as one of twelve international charity leaders to be awarded a major grant from the Open Society Foundations. Lucy received the award from OSF’s New Executives Fund, which gives grants to new leaders at non-profit organizations around the world to help implement their vision of change.

The two-year grant can be used to invest in the organisation’s development or the recipient’s own leadership. MLDI defends media freedom around the world by providing legal assistance to journalists and media...

How far does the “right to be forgotten” extend? Crucial case referred to Court of Justice of the European Union

After French authorities demanded Google search results be “de-listed” worldwide, the Court of Justice of the European Union has been asked to clarify whether domestic authorities can order the removal of search results globally under the EU law on the “right to be forgotten”. MLDI and 20 other organisations filed an intervention highlighting the free speech implications of global “de-listing”.
