State controlled media regulation is a threat to press freedom: MLDI files an amicus brief to European Court of Human Rights

MLDI, along with the Russian NGO the Mass Media Defence Centre (MMDC), submitted an amicus brief in the case of Novaya Gazeta and ZAO Novaya Gazeta v Russia on media regulation and its implications for the right to freedom of expression, arguing that state controlled regulation of the media can constitute a serious threat to press freedom.

“Defamation of the dead” and its chilling effect on media freedom: MLDI files brief to European Court

The European Court of Human Rights is set to consider a case filed by a Slovakian TV station after it was found by the Broadcasting Council to have breached broadcasting law in its reporting on the death of a public figure. MLDI has filed an intervention urging the European Court to clarify the extent to which the reputations of deceased persons are protected under the European Convention on Human Rights.
