A Year in Review: Our 2019 Annual Report

Our 2019 Annual Report has been designed in the style of our new branding which will be launched soon. The report includes words from across our team, case studies, interviews, stats and infographics, reflections and learnings. We discuss the general global climate for media freedom as well as specific issues and cases we’ve worked on in regions from Eastern Europe to Eastern Africa.

Press Freedom Guardians: Journalist Impact Survey 2019

Every year, we send a survey out to the journalists we have supported through our emergency defence fund and partner-funded defence projects. We do this to make sure that the people we support have a voice in how that support works.

Advocacy and Litigation Training - Final Evaluation Report

We conducted litigation and advocacy training surgeries in Banjul, the Gambia in November 2017. The litigation surgery was aimed at lawyers, and the advocacy surgery was aimed at journalists, civil society organisation and human rights defenders. Read the final evaluation report here.

Capacity Building: new report on the impact of MLDI’s partner grants

"the changes  resulted exclusively because of MLDI ’s support and funding, since without that funding no organisation would be able to provide such services …. Other funders, at the moment, seem uninterested in media related projects in general, and media legal defence is never listed among priority areas in their calls for proposals. Therefore, we could say that without MLDI’s support, journalists and media would find themselves in far more precarious situation.”

2017 Annual Report

2017 saw independent media come under a sustained attack around the world. In 2017 we supported more new cases, took on more strategic litigation and funded more national media defence centres than ever before. We also began preparations for our biggest lawyer training programme to date, aiming to train 72 lawyers on digital rights and freedom of expression online over two years.  In total, our work reached 52 countries.

MLDI dedicates time and resource into the monitoring and evaluation of its projects and programmes in order to learn, improve and grow. MLDI is committed to being a transparent organisation and wishes to share these lessons and findings with its supporters, but due to the sensitive nature of many of its evaluation reports, MLDI is not able to share the full reports externally, but instead has created this Learning Report to share key highlights and findings.
