Peter Noorlander
Legal Director
Peter Noorlander has worked for the Media Legal Defence Initiative since it was founded in June 2008. He played an integral role in setting up the organisation before focusing on his role as Legal Director. He is responsible for overseeing the legal portfolio of the Media Legal Defence Initiative. This includes developing legal programmes and overseeing grants.
Peter is a lawyer who has specialised in the fields of media law and human rights. He has worked for various international NGOs as well as for domestic human rights organisations in the United Kingdom.
Prior to joining the Media Legal Defence Initiative, he was Senior Legal Advisor for the Open Society Institute's Media Program, and he was also senior legal officer at ARTICLE 19, the global freedom of expression organisation.
Peter has been involved in freedom of expression litigation in various countries as well as at the international level, and also has extensive experience of legislative drafting in different countries. He has also conducted legal training and lectured on issues such as defamation law and practice and internet regulation.
Peter has also published widely on legal issues, both in specialised law journals as well as in mainstream media. Most recently he edited a Special Edition on Freedom of Expression of the European Human Rights Law Review.
Peter Noorlander has a Master of Laws from the University of Maastricht and a Master of Laws in Public International Law from the University of Nottingham
